Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is facing growing criticism from European Union leaders following last week’s unprecedented surge of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, a development that has reignited the bloc’s long-running debate over migration and border security.
Migration dominated discussions as EU leaders met on Tuesday, with several member states questioning Madrid’s handling of the crisis. Critics argued that Spain’s migration policies had contributed to the situation and called for stricter controls at sea, air and land border entry points across the European Union.
The crisis unfolded on July 30 and 31, when an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta from neighboring Morocco, overwhelming local authorities and triggering a humanitarian emergency in the North African territory.
Although most migrants later returned, the incident resulted in significant loss of life. According to Spanish and Moroccan authorities, more than 80 people were killed, with some drowning while others were trampled during the chaotic attempts to cross a breakwater barrier.
The events have once again exposed deep divisions within the 27-member European Union over migration policy. While several governments are pushing for stronger external border controls to prevent similar incidents, others continue to stress the need for a balanced approach that combines effective border management with humanitarian responsibilities.
The Ceuta crisis is expected to remain high on the EU’s political agenda as member states seek common ground on migration reform and the future of the bloc’s external border strategy.
