WEF president Borge Brende resigns following probe into ties with Jeffrey Epstein

TBM Report

Borge Brende, the President and CEO of the World Economic Forum (WEF), announced his resignation on Thursday after an independent investigation was launched regarding his past associations with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Brende, who has led the prestigious global organization since 2017, stated that his decision followed “careful consideration,” although his official statement omitted Epstein’s name.

The controversy erupted following the release of U.S. Department of Justice documents, which revealed that Brende attended at least three business dinners with Epstein and maintained communication via email and text messages. While Brende admitted to meeting Epstein in 2018, he claimed to be unaware of the financier’s criminal history at that time, expressing deep regret for not conducting further due diligence. Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of child sex offenses in 2008 and faced federal sex trafficking charges before his 2019 suicide, has left a trail of political and corporate fallout globally.

In the wake of this leadership exit, the WEF Board of Trustees has appointed Managing Director Alois Zwinggi as the interim President and CEO. Vice-Chairs Andre Hoffmann and Larry Fink confirmed that the board would oversee the transition and initiate the search for a permanent successor. The scandal continues to resonate far beyond Geneva, reigniting public scrutiny over Epstein’s ties with various high-profile figures, including political leaders and business titans, further challenging the ethical standards of international elite circles.
