A case has been filed at the local police station in connection over the death of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Maulana Rezaul Karim in political violence in Sherpur.
Late Friday night, the victim’s wife, Marjia Begum, formally filed a murder case at the Jhenaigati Police Station, naming 233 and citing up to 500 unidentified.
Sherpur Superintendent of Police (SP), Md Kamrul Islam, confirmed the development to the media on Saturday (31 January 2026) morning.
The case filed over the violent clash between activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday (28 January) at the Jhenaigati Upazila Mini Stadium. The clash reportedly took place over a dispute regarding seating arrangements during an electoral manifesto presentation, leaving over 65 people injured.
Meanwhile Sherpur SP also gave a stern warning against “case-trading”.
“Anyone attempting to trade on this tragedy will be treated as an extortionist,” the SP stated, assuring the public that no innocent person would be harassed during the investigation.
Maulana Rezaul Karim, 42, a lecturer and Sreebordi upazila unit secretary for Jamaat, succumbed to severe head injuries at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) hours after the clash.
District Jamaat leaders have already held protest rallies, demanding quick arrests and threatening “tougher movements” if the administration fails to act. A prayer meeting (doa mahfil) is scheduled for today at the site of the incident.
