Ukraine and Russia hold first direct talks over Trump’s peace plan

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Ukraine and Russia have commenced their first face-to-face negotiations in Abu Dhabi to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan. The two-day summit, which began Friday, marks a pivotal moment in the four-year-old conflict. While the initial draft of the plan faced backlash for favoring Moscow, the revised proposal involving European peacekeepers has brought both parties to the table.

The status of the Donbas region remains the primary deadlock. Moscow insists on the full withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the eastern territory—a demand President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly rejected. Despite the diplomatic friction, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, noted that the first session focused on defining the framework for future discussions and ending Russian aggression.

Amidst these high-level talks, the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to worsen due to relentless Russian strikes. Kyiv is grappling with severe power outages and a lack of heating during sub-zero temperatures. As Trump claims both sides are “close” to a deal, international observers remain skeptical, citing the deep-seated territorial disputes that continue to fuel the war.
