UNHRC extends probe into Iran’s ‘unprecedented’ crackdown

The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has strongly condemned Iran’s “unprecedented” violent suppression of anti-government protests, voting to intensify its investigation into human rights violations. On Friday, the 47-member council passed a resolution with 25 votes in favor, extending the mandates of the Special Rapporteur and the independent Fact-Finding Mission established after the death of Mahsa Amini.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk reported that security forces used direct fire against protesters, resulting in thousands of deaths, including children. He urged Tehran to halt the “brutal crackdown,” release all political detainees, and impose an immediate moratorium on the death penalty.

Tehran dismissed the session as a “political spectacle,” accusing Western powers of weaponizing human rights for diplomatic pressure. Allies like China and Cuba also opposed the move, labeling it as interference in Iran’s internal affairs. Despite internet blackouts, international monitors warn that the actual death toll likely far exceeds official government estimates.
