July Uprising Martyr Families Block Shahbagh, Demand Justice

Desk Report: Dozens of family members of the July uprising martyrs have blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding justice and official recognition for their loved ones’ sacrifices.

Holding photographs of the deceased and placards calling for justice, the protesters accused the government of indifference and neglect.

Call for Extradition and Fair Trials

Among their demands, the families called for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India and her prosecution for the July massacre.

“We have gone from door to door seeking justice and recognition for our martyrs, but instead of compassion, we were treated with disrespect,” said one protester, whose son was killed in the uprising.

Denied Access to Chief Adviser

The protesters alleged that they have been trying to meet Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus for months but have been repeatedly denied access.

“We recently visited Jamuna [the official residence of the chief adviser], but his officials kept us waiting for six hours and then sent us away without a meeting,” said another protester.

Criticism of Ongoing Trials

The families expressed frustration with the current trials related to the uprising, calling them a “circus” and claiming that many key figures responsible for the deadly crackdown remain free.

“Most of the perpetrators are still roaming free. This is an insult to the memory of those who gave their lives for this nation,” they said.

Protesters Vow to Stay Until Demands Are Met

The demonstrators have pledged to continue their blockade at Shahbagh until their demands are fulfilled. Their key demands include:

  • Official recognition of the martyrs
  • Fair compensation for their families
  • Swift legal action against those responsible for the violence

The protest continues to draw attention as the families seek justice for their lost loved ones.
