Staff Reporter: The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has announced the discontinuation of group photo sessions at the prestigious Ekushey Padak ceremony, following widespread criticism on social media. The decision comes in response to backlash over the recent Bangla Academy Sahitya Puroshkar (literary award) group photo, where recipients were seen standing behind other guests during the shoot.
In a press release issued yesterday, the ministry stated that the move aims to ensure that the awardees remain the focal point of the event. Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki hinted at the change in a verified Facebook post, emphasizing the need to modernize long-standing practices.
“And for those wondering why a practice should continue simply because it has existed for so long, let it be known that from this year’s Ekushey Padak ceremony, the tradition of group photo sessions will change. An exclusive photoshoot will be arranged for the awardees, where they will be at the centre of attention,” Farooki wrote.
Focus on Awardees
Under the new arrangement, Ekushey Padak recipients will participate in an exclusive photoshoot, ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve. This change is intended to highlight the contributions of the awardees and provide them with a more dignified experience.
About Ekushey Padak
The Ekushey Padak is Bangladesh’s second-highest national honor, awarded annually to individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions in fields such as literature, arts, culture, language movement, education, and social service. The ceremony, held on February 21 to commemorate Language Movement Day, is a significant event in the country’s cultural calendar.
Public Reaction
The decision to discontinue group photo sessions has been met with mixed reactions. While many have applauded the move as a step toward modernizing the event and honoring the awardees appropriately, others have expressed nostalgia for the traditional group photos. However, the ministry’s decision reflects a broader effort to adapt to contemporary expectations and ensure that the ceremony remains relevant and respectful to its recipients.
Next Steps
The upcoming Ekushey Padak ceremony will feature the new format, with an exclusive photoshoot for the awardees. The ministry has assured that the changes will enhance the overall experience for the honorees and attendees alike, while maintaining the dignity and prestige of the event.
