Operations halt at Chattogram port as workers protest NCT leasing decision

Operational activities at the country’s premier seaport, Chattogram Port, came to a near standstill on Saturday as workers launched an 8-hour strike protesting the government’s decision to lease the Newmooring Container Terminal (NCT) to a foreign entity. The strike, which began at 8 AM, disrupted cargo and container handling across major terminals, including the General Cargo Berth (GCB) and Chattogram Container Terminal (CCT).

Labor leaders representing the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal and Sramik-Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP) vowed to continue their protest until the decision to lease NCT to Dubai-based DP World is revoked. In response, the Port Authority issued a warning of administrative action against the protesters. Businesses expressed concerns over potential financial losses as ships remained idle at the berths.
