‘Walk the streets before you lead’: Asif Mahmud criticizes London-returned leadership

NCP spokesperson and Chairman of the Election Management Committee, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, has urged political leaders returning from abroad to understand the ground reality of Bangladesh before seeking public mandate. Speaking at an election rally in Debidwar on Wednesday, he directed a sharp critique toward leaders who spent the last 17 years in London.

“You were in London for 17 years. Step down from the bus and walk through the lanes and streets of Bangladesh first. Know the country before asking for our trust,” Mahmud asserted. He highlighted that after 17 years of oppression under Sheikh Hasina’s regime, the people have witnessed a similar pattern of coercion from another party in the last 17 months, even without being formally in power.

Stressing NCP’s roots, Mahmud added that their leadership emerged from the July Uprising and the grassroots, not from “absurd statements” made in air-conditioned rooms. He emphasized that only those who understand the struggles of the soil can provide realistic solutions for the people.
