U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Canada for opposing the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense project in Greenland. Warning of a geopolitical shift, Trump claimed that Beijing would “swallow Canada within a year” if it continues to prioritize trade ties with China over its security alliance with the United States. The tension escalated on Friday via Truth Social, highlighting a growing rift between the North American neighbors.
The friction intensified following the Davos 2026 summit, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defended his country’s shift toward a “multipolar trade strategy.” Trump accused Canada of being a “free rider” on U.S. security, asserting that without American protection, Canada’s sovereignty would be at risk. This rhetoric follows Canada’s recent $7 billion trade agreement with China, which includes significant tariff reductions on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs).
In response, Prime Minister Carney emphasized the need for an independent and stable economy in an increasingly uncertain world. The new Canada-China deal aims to diversify trade partners, reducing reliance on Washington. While the “Golden Dome” remains a point of military contention, the trade pivot signals a new chapter in North American diplomacy, potentially weakening the traditional Western alliance.
