Ahead of the general elections scheduled for March 5, four ministers from Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s interim cabinet have stepped down to file their nominations. Prominent figures including Education Minister Mahabir Pun and Energy Minister Kulman Ghising are among those who resigned on Tuesday to join the electoral fray.
Pun, a well-known scientist, is running as an independent, while Ghising has taken leadership of the Ujalo Nepal Party. The elections come after months of political turmoil following the resignation of former PM K.P. Sharma Oli amid Gen Z-led protests. With over 18.9 million registered voters, including a significant youth demographic, this election is viewed as a critical turning point for Nepal’s democracy.
