Uganda police deny Bobi Wine’s arrest as Museveni leads election race

Uganda’s police force has officially refuted claims that opposition leader Bobi Wine was arrested following a military raid on his residence. Simultaneously, long-serving President Yoweri Museveni appears set for a landslide victory, leading with 72% of the vote as 90% of ballots are counted. The National Unity Platform (NUP) alleged that a military helicopter forcibly removed Wine to an undisclosed location, a claim authorities dismiss as “baseless.”

The election, conducted amidst a nationwide internet blackout, has been marred by allegations of widespread fraud from the opposition. While voting on Thursday was largely peaceful, deadly clashes erupted in the Butambala district on Friday. Local lawmakers claim security forces killed 10 people during house raids, though police officials maintain they only used force in self-defense during an attack on a polling station. International observers remain concerned as the 81-year-old Museveni tightens his 36-year grip on power amidst a deepening political divide.
