Twenty-five Bangladeshi nationals, previously convicted and imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have returned home following a presidential pardon. The UAE Embassy in Dhaka confirmed the release in a press statement on Sunday.
The group faced various prison sentences for participating in solidarity rallies and protests across the UAE during Bangladesh’s mass uprising in July 2024. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan granted the clemency after the Bangladesh government formally requested their release on humanitarian grounds.
All 25 individuals have already arrived in Bangladesh. Embassy officials stated that this gesture highlights the UAE leadership’s commitment to compassion and tolerance. It also reflects the deep-rooted, brotherly relations between the two nations.
This is not the first time the UAE President has shown such leniency. He has pardoned expatriates on several previous occasions, underscoring the humanitarian approach and diplomatic friendship between the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh.
