Desk Report: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has strongly condemned the circulation of “fake history” and stressed the importance of accurately portraying historical events. Speaking at a discussion event organized by the Dhaka South City unit of Jamaat-e-Islami at the National Press Club in Dhaka, Dr. Rahman emphasized that “the right story must come to light,” and that history should reflect all aspects of the past, not just those favorable to certain individuals or groups.
“We do not want to see any fake story in the name of history; the right story must come to light,” he stated, adding that everyone deserves to be recognized in history. “If you bring to light only those you favor and discard others, this becomes a story, not history.”
Dr. Rahman made the remarks in observance of International Mother Language Day, while honoring the martyrs of the language movement. He noted that the sacrifices of the language martyrs, who gave their lives for the Bengali language, must be properly acknowledged. “None of the martyrs have mothers alive, and their families have been suffering. Has this country failed to support them?” he questioned.
He criticized the government for not fulfilling its responsibility to assist the families of the language movement martyrs, stating, “We are ashamed of ourselves. We engage in politics but fail to fulfill our duties properly.” He further asserted that the responsibility for addressing these failures lies with the government, as they are in charge of the state.
Dr. Rahman called on the government to visit the families of the language movement martyrs and offer them dignified support.
During his address, Dr. Rahman also criticized the previous government, describing it as a “fascist” regime that oppressed all citizens, including members of his party, except its own supporters. He referenced the execution of several top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami through the courts and expressed concern over the ongoing detention of party leader ATM Azharul Islam, who remains imprisoned despite the current government’s tenure.
Dr. Rahman declared his willingness to voluntarily imprison himself if ATM Azharul Islam is not released soon, expressing his commitment to the cause and to securing justice for the party’s members.
The discussion meeting concluded with a call for justice, respect for historical truth, and a reminder of the government’s duty to care for the families of the nation’s heroes.
