Staff Correspondence : A 10-year-old child, Jannatul Mawa, died after being run over by a three-wheeled auto rickshaw in Barishal. The accident occurred when Jannatul, who had bought chips and was crossing the road, was hit by a speeding yellow auto rickshaw. Local people rushed her to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
The incident took place on Sunday at around 11:30 AM near BM College Road in the city. Jannatul, the daughter of Mohammad Nijam Uddin from Patuakhali Sadar Upazila, was visiting a relative’s house in the BM College Road area at the time of the accident.
According to eyewitnesses, Jannatul, along with another child relative, was crossing the road after buying chips from a shop near the first gate of BM College. At that moment, a speeding auto rickshaw lost control and hit Jannatul. She was seriously injured, and locals immediately took her to the hospital, where she was later declared dead by the attending doctors.
Following the accident, locals staged a protest in the area, demanding justice for the reckless auto rickshaw driver. The protest caused traffic disruption on the road for nearly an hour until the police arrived and brought the situation under control.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, confirmed the incident, stating that the police seized the auto rickshaw at the scene. However, the driver fled after the incident. The body of the deceased has been sent to the Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
