The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) witnessed a volatile exchange of words on Sunday (March 1, 2026), as the United States and Israel faced off against Iran following a wave of coordinated military strikes. UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the emergency session with a stark warning, stating that the current military actions risk igniting an “uncontrollable chain of events” in the world’s most unstable region. He underscored that international peace and security are facing a grave threat, demanding an immediate de-escalation.
The urgency of the meeting followed hours after reports of massive explosions near the presidential palace and the Supreme Leader’s compound in Tehran. While U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media to claim the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it “justice for victims of terror,” the United Nations stated it could not independently verify these reports. U.S. Representative Mike Waltz defended the strikes, arguing that the cost of inaction against Iran’s nuclear and missile programs was too high for global safety.
In a sharp rebuttal, Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani accused the U.S. and Israel of “unprovoked and premeditated aggression.” He specifically highlighted a strike on a school in the southern city of Minab, labeling it a “war crime” that resulted in numerous child casualties. Israel’s representative, Danny Danon, countered that the military actions were a “necessity” to neutralize existential threats, not an act of aggression. As the debate raged on, Guterres reiterated that the only path forward is a diplomatic transition to prevent a broader regional catastrophe.
