Graft in welfare board: 3 bureaucratic associates suspended following surprise raid led by state minister over expat compensation bribery

Date:

TBM Report

In a swift administrative crackdown against institutional corruption, two personnel from the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board (WEWB) and a low-tier associate of the Probashi Kallyan Bank have been placed under administrative suspension. The punitive mandate was formalized via an emergency executive order enacted Saturday, following an anti-graft operation led by the State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, Mo. Nurul Huq. The suspended personnel were caught extorting illicit financial kickbacks from the bereaved family of a deceased migrant worker in exchange for releasing state-guaranteed death compensations.

Statutory registries identify the suspended individuals as WEWB Security Guard Md. Shafi Uddin, Office Assistant Palash Chandra Roy, and Probashi Kallyan Bank Clerk Shamim. Investigative briefs show that Shafi and Palash aggressively demanded and accepted cash bribes from the family of deceased Saudi expatriate Md. Kaiyum—a native of Gafargaon, Mymensingh—to expedite the clearance of their legitimate financial aid dossier. Concurrently, Shamim, the bank clerk, utilized his proximity to loan processing pipelines to illicitly extract funds from another migrant worker under the false pretense of facilitating rehabilitation credit facilities.

The institutional gridlock was broken when State Minister Mo. Nurul Huq, accompanied by the Director General of the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board and the aggrieved complainants, executed an unannounced, high-profile tactical inspection of the suspects’ operational offices. Upon conducting a real-time cross-examination and evaluating empirical evidence, the State Minister verified the institutional extortion and ordered immediate suspension proceedings under the prevailing Government Servants Discipline and Appeal Rules.

The official administrative decree noted that the predatory misconduct of the employees significantly compromised the corporate image and operational integrity of the Ministry, constituting a severe breach of statutory discipline. Under the suspension protocols effective from May 23, the individuals are barred from active service and will strictly receive a baseline subsistence allowance. “We are enforcing an absolute zero-tolerance matrix against any matrix of corruption, harassment, or bureaucratic extortion targeting our remittance warriors and their dependents, whether domestically or across international foreign missions,” State Minister Nurul Huq emphasized during a subsequent press briefing.
