Ending months of political speculation, Suvendu Adhikari has been officially named the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision on Friday (May 8, 2026) following a crucial meeting with newly elected BJP lawmakers at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata. The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is scheduled to take place at the historic Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday (May 9).
During the legislative party meeting, Amit Shah revealed that the selection process was unanimous. Out of eight proposals submitted by the lawmakers, every single one endorsed Suvendu Adhikari. Despite being given ample time for alternative nominations, no other names were proposed. “The process for selecting the legislative party leader has been completed with total consensus. Therefore, we officially declare Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal,” Shah stated.
Political analysts suggest that Adhikari’s consistent victories over Mamata Banerjee—most notably in her home constituency of Bhowanipore—solidified his position as the top contender for the role. Furthermore, his strong backing from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological backbone of the BJP, played a pivotal role in his nomination. Adhikari’s transition from a grassroots leader to the state’s top executive marks a significant shift in Bengal’s political landscape.
The upcoming ceremony at the Brigade Parade Ground is expected to be a major event, attended by top federal ministers and party leadership. With this appointment, the BJP seeks to implement its administrative vision for West Bengal, focusing on governance and economic reforms. Adhikari’s ascent to power concludes a decade-long dominance of the Trinamool Congress and ushers in a new era for the state.
