In a massive strategic setback for the US Navy, the world’s largest and most expensive aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is withdrawing from the Red Sea theater following a catastrophic series of fires and mechanical failures. According to a report by The Guardian on Wednesday, the vessel is currently being redirected toward the Souda Bay Naval Base in Crete, Greece, for emergency repairs.
The $13 billion carrier, which has been the centerpiece of “Operation Epic Fury” against Iran since last year, has been plagued by a 30-hour laundry room fire that left 200 sailors sick from smoke inhalation. Beyond the fire, a chronic failure of the ship’s plumbing system has left 650 toilets unusable, forcing thousands of sailors into unsanitary conditions. US Senator Mark Warner criticized the deployment, stating that President Trump’s military decisions have pushed the crew to a breaking point after nearly a year at sea without respite.
As the Ford retreats for repairs, the US Navy is reportedly preparing to deploy the USS George H.W. Bush as a replacement. However, the temporary absence of the Ford, which had successfully targeted over 7,000 Iranian sites, creates a significant power vacuum in the volatile Middle East waters. Investigations are also underway to determine if internal sabotage by disgruntled crew members played a role in the recent disasters.
