New Delhi asserts Bangladesh PM’s advisor held SAARC visa on private passport

TBM Report

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued its definitive structural response regarding the operational detention and subsequent voluntary repatriation of Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Advisor, Zahed Ur Rahman, at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Convening a federal press brief on Tuesday (June 23, 2026), MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the Presidential Advisor accessed Indian territory utilizing a private passport stamped with a SAARC visa construct, intended for leading the Bangladeshi delegation at the 28th Senior Officials’ Committee Meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

Spokesperson Jaiswal vindicated the immigration oversight, stating, “The advisory representative was subjected to localized immigration screenings at Delhi infrastructure strictly to re-verify and confirm the structural objectives of the itinerary. Following due clearances, the delegate was formally granted absolute authorization to access the sovereign territory for the multilateral summit. However, the dignitary opted to execute a voluntary return to Dhaka without entering the domestic perimeter.”

Contrastingly, the operational execution of the immigration clearance has triggered a severe diplomatic rift between the South Asian neighbors. Wire dispatches and reports from Indian broadcaster News18 verified that the Prime Minister’s Advisor reached Delhi on the evening of June 14, where he was subjected to an unannounced two-and-a-half-hour isolation by terminal authorities without explicit cause. Classifying the event as a grave breach of diplomatic courtesy, Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman cancelled his official state mission under protest, boarding a transit route via Colombo, Sri Lanka, to return to Dhaka the following morning.

The administrative fallout prompted swift retaliatory diplomatic measures from Dhaka. On June 15, the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Acting Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pawan Badhe, registering an unyielding note of protest. Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman designated the Entirety of the frontier incident as “unprecedented, highly regrettable, and fundamentally incongruous with international diplomatic protocols,” warning that the treatment of statutory state representatives challenges contemporary bilateral agreements.
