Two U.S. navy fighter jets crash after mid-air collision in Idaho; All 4 crew members safe

Date:

TBM Report

Two U.S. Navy electronic warfare fighter jets crashed following a dramatic mid-air collision during an aviation show in Idaho on Sunday (May 17, 2026). Despite the catastrophic impact, all four crew members aboard the aircraft managed to eject successfully moments before the crash. Authorities confirmed that the emergency escape systems functioned flawlessly, preventing what could have been a major military disaster with significant casualties.

The severe accident transpired at the Mountain Home Air Force Base in western Idaho, where thousands had gathered for the scheduled aerial demonstration. Commander Amelia Umayam, a spokesperson for the U.S. Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet, identified the downed aircraft as EA-18G Growlers. The multi-million-dollar tactical jets were assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 129 (VAQ-129), home-based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington State.

Emergency response and search-and-rescue teams were deployed immediately to the crash perimeter to recover the safely ejected aviators. While the crew members were transported to base medical facilities for routine precautionary evaluations, initial reports indicate they sustained no life-threatening injuries. The rapid response measures successfully contained the burning wreckage away from civilian spectator zones, minimizing ground infrastructure damage.

In the immediate aftermath of the mid-air collision, command leadership ordered an indefinite suspension of the airshow’s remaining flight itineraries. A high-level military mishap board has been convened by the Department of the Navy to conduct a rigorous forensic investigation into the structural and operational causes of the crash. Investigators will analyze flight data recorders and telemetry to discern whether mechanical failure or pilot disorientation precipitated the collision.
