TBM Report
In a major move to bolster the country’s national defense capabilities, the government has undertaken a strategic initiative to establish a state-of-the-art drone manufacturing plant in Bogura in joint venture with Turkey. The specialized military production facility will be strategically situated adjacent to the under-construction Bogura International Airport. Concurrently, fast-tracked administrative operations are underway to establish the first-ever operational base of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) in the country’s northern region. State Minister for Local Government, Mir Shahe Alam, disclosed this monumental defense infrastructure plan on Thursday (July 9) during the ‘BSRF Dialogue’ held at the media center of the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.
Elaborating on the sovereign blueprint, State Minister Alam confirmed that during a recent parliamentary question-and-answer session, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman officially announced the joint venture framework with Turkey to build the drone production facility next to the upcoming airbase. The minister emphasized that the northern zone has historically lacked an international aviation gateway, inducing economic and tactical vulnerabilities. To address this long-standing geopolitical gap, the government is transforming the existing Bogura airfield into a fully fledged international airport, which, coupled with the neighboring drone manufacturing unit, is projected to play an indispensable role in intensifying domestic defense self-reliance.
Furthermore, the state minister revealed that administrative authorization has been granted for the deployment of the strategic BAF base. Future cutting-edge fighter jets inducted into the national defense fleet will be permanently stationed at this upcoming facility to safeguard the northern airspace. The plenary discussion, chaired by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) President Masudul Haque and moderated by General Secretary Obaidullah Badal, serves as a high-level briefing platform where key civil and military development portfolios are communicated to the international and domestic press corps.
Historically, the Bogura airfield, originally constructed during the Pakistan era, had been underutilized for decades despite several administrative promises of modernization. While conceptual frameworks to elevate the facility were initiated during the regimes of late President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, the critical infrastructure project consistently stalled due to shifting political dynamics and bureaucratic bottlenecks. However, the current administration’s synchronized approach to merging civil aviation modernization with strategic defense production marks a decisive turning point for Bangladesh’s aerospace capabilities and regional security architecture.
