Desk Report: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the global body’s unwavering commitment to addressing the Rohingya crisis and expressed strong solidarity with Bangladesh in managing its humanitarian impact. In a letter sent to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, Guterres acknowledged the growing strain on Bangladesh due to the worsening conditions in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and pledged continued global support for the country.
UN’s Solidarity with Bangladesh
In the letter, Guterres emphasized the UN’s steadfast support for Bangladesh, stating, “I would like to reiterate the strong solidarity of the United Nations with Bangladesh and our support for the transition process under your leadership.” He also expressed deep concern over the impact of the Rohingya crisis on Bangladesh and the region, as well as the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Rakhine.
Focus on Safe Repatriation and Humanitarian Aid
Guterres stressed the importance of creating conditions conducive to the “safe and voluntary return of the Rohingya to Rakhine.” He assured that the UN would continue to work closely with regional actors, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and other stakeholders to find a political solution to the crisis.
The Secretary-General also pledged to prioritize humanitarian assistance, stating, “I have requested my senior managers to provide guidance to the United Nations Country Teams in Bangladesh and Myanmar on how we can maximize humanitarian aid and livelihood support to communities in Rakhine.”
Upcoming High-Level Conference
Guterres expressed hope that the upcoming high-level conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar would serve as a platform to renew global attention and develop comprehensive solutions. He remarked, “I am hopeful that the High-level Conference will be an opportunity to galvanize renewed global attention and contribute to developing a wider range of solutions for Rohingya and other minorities.”
Guterres’ Visit to Bangladesh
The UN chief confirmed his upcoming visit to Bangladesh in March, coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan. He expressed his eagerness to further discussions on the crisis during his trip, stating, “I look forward to furthering our discussions during my upcoming visit to Bangladesh.”
Background of the Crisis
The Rohingya crisis has placed immense pressure on Bangladesh, which currently hosts over a million refugees who fled violence and persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The UN has been a key partner in providing humanitarian assistance and advocating for a sustainable resolution to the crisis.
Guterres’ letter underscores the UN’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh and its efforts to address the challenges posed by the refugee situation while working toward a long-term political solution in Myanmar.
