UK considers social media ban for children to protect mental health

Following in the footsteps of Australia, the UK government is exploring a potential ban on social media for children. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized on Tuesday that excessive scrolling and the pressure for online validation are trapping children in a “harmful world of anxiety.”

Ministers are set to visit Australia—the first country to ban social media for those under 16—to study the feasibility and enforcement of such regulations. The Labour government is also planning to crack down on AI-generated deepfakes and tighten age-verification protocols. “Childhood should not be about the judgment of strangers,” Starmer stated, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring a safe digital environment for the younger generation.
