Desk Report:
In a bid to enhance law and order during Ramadan and Eid, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali announced on Saturday, March 8, that private security forces at residential areas, shopping malls, and markets in Dhaka will now be authorized to assist the police and make arrests.
During a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, Commissioner Sazzat explained that markets and shopping malls in Dhaka remain open late into the night during the festive season. As a result, private security personnel assigned to these locations will now work as an auxiliary police force to help maintain security.
These security personnel have been granted the authority to make arrests, a measure intended to ensure the safety and security of the public during the busy Ramadan and Eid periods. The decision follows provisions in The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance, which allows the police commissioner to appoint individuals as auxiliary police officers when additional support is needed.
According to the ordinance, auxiliary police officers will have the same powers, duties, and immunities as regular police officers, and they will be subject to the same penalties and authority. They will also receive a certificate of appointment in line with the ordinance’s requirements.
This move aims to ensure a safer environment in Dhaka’s residential and commercial areas during the busy and crowded nights of Ramadan and Eid shopping.
