Desk Report:
Hundreds of supporters, particularly students, have gathered at the capital’s Manik Mia Avenue to witness the historic launch of the Jatiya Nagorik Party. This new political movement, led by the youth organization Students Against Discrimination (SAD), has drawn participants from across the country, eager to support a fresh, student-led initiative.
Supporters began arriving early in the morning, with many traveling by bus from various districts to attend what they consider a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Abdul Hannan, a college student from Halishahar, Chattogram, arrived with 27 others. “I support SAD. I came here to attend the inauguration because I believe they will build a new Bangladesh, free from discrimination,” he shared, emphasizing the need for new political leadership to drive meaningful change.
In addition to Hannan’s group, nine other buses brought participants from Chattogram, the country’s second-largest city. Md Rakib Hossain, a university student from Khulna, traveled with ten others. “Following the mass uprising, we now have an unprecedented opportunity to build a new Bangladesh. I traveled all the way from Khulna to express my support for this party, as they give us hope for change,” he said.
Supporters at the event are expressing high hopes for the party’s direction. Shafiqul Islam, a resident of Kalabagan in Dhaka, called the event a historic moment. “Those who played a role in toppling Sheikh Hasina’s government are now forming a political party. This is undoubtedly a significant development for the country. I am here to support this student-led movement,” he said. He further outlined his expectations, hoping the party would focus on issues such as eliminating corruption, advocating for the welfare of the masses, ensuring an independent judiciary, and establishing a discrimination-free society.
A large stage has been set up at the venue, surrounded by hundreds of chairs for guests. Numerous megaphones have been placed to ensure that speeches are heard clearly by the large crowd. Security at the event has been heightened, with a notable presence of police personnel, BPG security guards stationed in front of the stage, and firefighting units on standby to ensure safety.
As the anticipation builds, supporters eagerly await the official announcement and roadmap of the Jatiya Nagorik Party, hoping it will usher in a new era of inclusive and progressive politics in Bangladesh.
