College student killed in tragic crash on Chattogram elevated expressway

Date:

TBM Report

A promising life was cut short on the Chattogram Elevated Expressway as a young woman died after falling from a reckless, speeding private car on Thursday (April 9, 2026). The victim, identified as Samia Jahan (22), was a third-year undergraduate student in the Economics Department at Hazera Taju Degree College. The incident, which occurred late in the afternoon near the Patenga section, has sparked fresh concerns over speeding on the newly built thoroughfare.

According to police reports, the vehicle was traveling at an extremely high velocity when the driver, Saidul Alam, lost control. The impact was so severe that Samia was ejected from the car onto the pavement, sustaining fatal injuries. Port Thana Sub-Inspector (SI) Ershad Mia confirmed that she was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). The driver also sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the same facility under police surveillance.

The circumstances surrounding Samia’s presence in the vehicle remain unclear to her family. Her uncle, Gias Uddin Shikdar, stated that Samia had left home in the morning to attend an exam at her college. The family was devastated to receive news of the crash at around 3:30 PM, noting that they had no prior acquaintance with the driver, Saidul Alam. “We don’t know who this driver is or how she ended up in that car after her exam,” her uncle told the media.

Abdur Rahim, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Port Thana, confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. “We are looking into whether mechanical failure or sheer negligence led to this tragedy,” he said. The vehicle has been impounded, and Samia’s body is currently at the morgue awaiting an autopsy. This incident has reignited the debate on the lack of speed monitoring on elevated expressways, where drivers often ignore safety regulations, leading to fatal consequences.
