A long-standing dispute over ancestral land ownership between two neighboring families escalated into a horrific bloody conflict in Ostakhan village under Gabkhan Dhansiri union of Jhalakathi Sadar Upazila, leaving four members of a family, including a woman, critically hacked. The targeted victims were cornered inside their residential compound during the early hours of Tuesday (May 19, 2026). Law enforcement channels and medical experts confirmed that the condition of all the wounded remains highly critical, with active procedures underway to airlift one victim to Dhaka due to a deep cranial laceration.
According to local accounts and formal complaints lodged by Asim Haldar, the son-in-law of the primary victim, the land assets belonging to Subhash Hawlader had been systematically and unlawfully occupied by their neighbor, Kanai Lal Hawlader. On Tuesday morning, Kanai Lal, along with his sons Kamal and Kishor, and a local accomplice identified as Mrinal, allegedly breached the residential threshold of Subhash’s house. Armed with lethal domestic weapons, the assailants executed an unprovoked, coordinated assault on the occupants.
The victims, identified as Subhash Hawlader, his sons Sourav Hawlader and Sujan Hawlader, and a female family member, Beauty Rani, sustained severe deep-tissue and arterial wounds. Alerted by the victims’ desperate cries for assistance, Pradip, a neighbor from the adjacent ‘Ballav Bari’ compound, rushed to the site, rescued the bleeding casualties, and evacuated them to the Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital via an electric auto-rickshaw. Recognizing the severity of the internal hemorrhaging, the emergency medical officers transferred all four casualties to the Sher-i-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barishal.
Inspector (Investigation) Mehdi Hasan of the Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station confirmed that the precinct is actively documenting the first information report (FIR) for formal prosecution. In a tactical counter-move, police response units have taken Sadhana Haldar, the wife of the prime accused Kanai Lal, into protective police custody for comprehensive interrogation. Concurrently, the detained suspect asserted a counter-claim, alleging that her husband was also severely injured during the physical altercation and is currently receiving parallel clinical care under surveillance in Barishal.
