Barishal university suspends physical education deputy director over negligence of duty

Date:

TBM Report

The Barishal University (BU) administration has temporarily suspended Selina Begum, the Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Education, over allegations of gross negligence and non-cooperation. The disciplinary action was formalized on Sunday (May 17, 2026) through an official order signed by the acting Registrar of the university, Md. Humayun Kabir. The decision followed a formal complaint lodged by the varsity’s central football team players and general students.

According to institutional sources, the controversy stems from an incident on April 13 during the Inter-University Football Tournament, where Barishal University was scheduled to face the University of Dhaka (DU). Despite the players being physically present at the venue, the BU team was disqualified and barred from playing due to administrative failure and a lack of required logistical cooperation from the physical education official. This premature exit from a high-stakes tournament sparked intense resentment among the campus sports community.

Upon returning to the campus from the tournament venue in Chittagong, the aggrieved footballers and students launched a demonstration on May 14. They submitted a formal memorandum to the university authorities, demanding the immediate removal of the official within a strict six-hour ultimatum. In response to the escalating student unrest and prime-facie substance in the allegations, the university management initiated the suspension to restore administrative discipline.

The suspension order noted that the action was taken under Article 2(b) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, read with Section 44(6) of the Barishal University Act, to facilitate a transparent probe into the alleged misconduct. During this temporary suspension period, the official will receive a subsistence allowance as per statutory service rules. The university has also hinted at forming a high-level inquiry committee to determine further permanent disciplinary actions.
