Devastating fire guts 10 houses in Jhalokathi; Families left destitute

Date:

TBM report

A massive fire broke out in the Shashanghat area of Jhalokathi town on Monday (April 6, 2026), reducing ten residential houses to ashes. The blaze, which started around 3:00 PM, quickly spread through the densely populated neighborhood, causing widespread panic. Four units from the Jhalokathi Fire Service, with the help of local residents, battled the flames for nearly two hours before bringing the situation under control.

While no casualties or injuries were reported, the affected families have lost everything, including furniture, cash, and essential documents. Victims were seen grieving amidst the ruins of their homes, stating that the fire destroyed their life savings within minutes. The intensity of the blaze and the close proximity of the wooden structures accelerated the destruction, leaving at least ten families without shelter.

Selim Mia, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence (Barishal Division), stated that the fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. “We managed to prevent the fire from spreading further into the town, but the initial damage is significant,” he added. A formal investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause and the total financial loss incurred.

Local authorities are being urged to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation for the displaced families. This tragic incident, occurring just weeks before the Eid festivities, has cast a shadow of sorrow over the community. Fire officials have once again advised citizens to be cautious with electrical wiring and to ensure regular safety checks to prevent such domestic disasters.
