UN chief guterres cites India-EU FTA as a blueprint for multipolar world order

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has hailed the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a significant step toward a stable, multipolar world. Outlining his priorities for 2026 at a press conference on Thursday, Guterres emphasized that global challenges cannot be resolved by a single dominant power or a binary rivalry between the US and China.

Labeling the India-EU pact as a landmark “Mother of All Deals,” the UN chief noted that such trade and technology networks among emerging and established economies are essential for a fair global order. Signed on January 27, 2026, the deal covers a market of 2 billion people and deepens defense ties. Guterres also called for urgent reforms of the UN Security Council to reflect this new multipolar reality, asserting that peace remains the collective responsibility of international institutions rather than individual power blocs.
