Authorities have deployed five platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the Jhenaigati and Sreebardi upazilas of Sherpur to maintain law and order following the death of a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader. The move comes after violent clashes erupted between BNP and Jamaat activists on Wednesday during an election manifesto event.
Maulana Rezaul Karim, the Secretary of Sreebardi Upazila Jamaat, lost his life, and over a hundred others were injured in the skirmishes. By Thursday morning, the area remained tense, with most shops closed and thin public presence. Both the BNP candidate, Mahmudul Haq Rubel, and the Jamaat candidate, Nuruzzaman Badal, have traded accusations over the incident.
Sherpur District Police Superintendent Kamrul Islam confirmed that an investigation is underway and law enforcement agencies are on high alert to prevent further escalation.
