Death toll rises to 15 in southern Philippines ferry disaster; 316 rescued

The death toll from a ferry disaster in the southern Philippines has climbed to at least 15, while 316 people have been successfully rescued. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) continued its search and rescue operations on Monday to locate at least 28 individuals still reported missing.

The vessel, MV Lady Mary Joy 3, was en route from Zamboanga to Jolo when the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday. According to PCG officials, the ferry was carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew members, staying within its authorized capacity. Despite the casualties, the calm sea conditions have assisted rescuers in preventing a higher death toll.

Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman reported that survivors are receiving medical attention at Isabela Port, with many being treated for shock and minor injuries. Local authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the disaster, which highlights the recurring maritime safety challenges in the archipelago nation.
