Jamaat candidate in Jhalakathi show-cased for violating electoral code

An electoral inquiry committee has issued a show-cause notice to Fayzul Huq, the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for Jhalakathi-1, over allegations of exploiting religious sentiments for political gain. Judicial Officer Rezwana Afrin, the inquiry official for the constituency, issued the order on Friday evening.

The notice follows a viral video of an assembly held on January 7, where Huq allegedly used religious appeals to solicit votes. The committee identified this act as a violation of Sections 15(a), 16(e), and 18 of the Electoral Code of Conduct 2025,which prohibits the misuse of religion and premature campaigning.

The candidate must appear in person on Monday, January 12, to provide a written explanation. Failure to provide a satisfactory response will result in the committee recommending formal legal action to the Election Commission.

In his defense, Fayzul Huq claimed his remarks were misinterpreted. “I respect the law and am preparing to submit my formal response within the deadline,” he stated.
