Govt Considers Universal Military Training for Youth

Desk Report: The possibility of introducing Universal Military Training for the country’s youth was discussed at the recent Deputy Commissioners (DC) Conference. Abdul Hafiz, special assistant to the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, addressed the issue during a press briefing at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, following the final session of the three-day conference.

The discussion was sparked by a question from one of the Deputy Commissioners. Hafiz explained that the idea of offering military training to young people could enhance national defense. However, he noted that the decision would ultimately be political and dependent on financial considerations. He added that if the government approves the initiative, the armed forces are prepared to implement it.

The conference also emphasized strengthening coordination between the civil administration and the armed forces.

Hafiz provided an update on the ongoing nationwide joint forces operation, revealing that 1,400 weapons and 250,000 rounds of ammunition looted during the August unrest are still unrecovered. He stated that while three-quarters of the 6,000 looted weapons had been recovered, the operation continues to track down the remaining ammunition.

He cautioned that autocratic forces and their allies are regrouping and may pose a threat to the country’s stability. He urged the DCs to remain vigilant in light of these concerns.

In addition, Hafiz highlighted the need for market stability and reliable power supply ahead of Ramadan. He urged DCs to take appropriate measures to ensure that essential goods are available at affordable prices and that citizens can access government services without disruption.

“People expect peaceful nights, affordable goods, and smooth government services. Those working at the grassroots level are the true representatives of the government,” he remarked.
